State Fire Management reports over 9,500 hectares burned already this year

MEXICO – Chetumal, Q.R. — The State Fire Management Center of Quintana Roo reports more than 9,525 hectares of forest have been burned already this year. The agency says that forest fire fighters continue to work hard to reduce damage.

They say that with coordinated efforts between the National Forest Commission, National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, Ecology Secretariat and Environment and the State Coordination of Civil Protection, brigades under the coordination of Francisco Chimal extinguished the 1,507 hectare Chiquilá fire in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

In Bacalar, the conflagration in the archaeological zone of Ichkabal that covers 3,300 hectares, is attended to by the State Incident Management Team with support of the GTO and with two helicopters. They have an advance of 60 percent of liquidation and a control of 45 percent.

According to protocols of the State Incident Management Team, daily field meetings are held with the operations, logistics and division supervisor sections to establish and plan tactics and strategies.

In Othón P. Blanco, in Mahahual, the La Charra fire being fought by CONAFOR and the State Civil Protection, is 50 percent controlled and 40 percent liquidated, while the forest fire at Santa Elena is 40 percent under control under the coordination of Marcos Guzmán.

Forest fires in Quintana Roo have been fought by elements from CONAFOR Quintana Roo, Durango, Campeche, Jalisco, Chiapas, Hidalgo and Guanajuato, the National Institute of Anthropology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, State and Municipal Civil Protection and Marine.
