Fire crews were called out to battle a massive blaze at a city nature reserve – for the third day running.

Grass fires at the Gramps broke out on Friday evening, on Saturday and again yesterday.

A spokeswoman added: “It was two large seats of fire, approximately 100×50 metres (328x164ft).”

It is not yet known if the fires are being treated as suspicious. Crews left the scene at 10.15pm.

Councillor Stephen Flynn, who represents the area, said the fire was “extremely concerning”.

He said: “I’ve been outside the house and seen the flames myself.

“It’s extremely concerning.

“Hopefully everyone is safe, particularly those living nearby. The scale of the flames last night in particular is deeply concerning.

“The Gramps has an unfortunate history of fire-raising. Hopefully there hasn’t been any intentional action but if there has I would urge anyone with information to contact the authorities.”

More than 20 firefighters battled the blaze on Friday night for nearly six hours after the alarm was raised at 6.46pm.

On Saturday another 11 firefighters were back at the scene after parts of the fire had reignited at 12.28pm.
