MALAYSIA – MIRI: The state authorities are using tube wells to douse underground fires.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) had opened up numerous tube wells to draw water.

“We are carrying out aerial water bombing too.

“In addition, DID is activating underground tube wells in order to flood the areas affected by peat fires,” he said.

Supt Law added fires have broken out near an orphanage in Kuala Baram.

Meanwhile, the air pollutant index at Kuala Baram was over 100 yesterday.

Kuala Baram is 25km north of Miri city.

On Saturday evening, parts of Canada Hill overlooking the city were also on fire, contributing to the haze affecting several areas in Sarawak.
