CANADA – Firefighters worked more than four hours in blazing heat over the weekend to battle a stubborn fire at the Condie Nature Refuge.
According to Regina Fire and Protective Services, crews arrived on the scene north of the city shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday for a grass fire that had spread into some trees — and also consumed a gated compound containing boats, trailers and quads.
Greg Girard was driving back into the city from Regina Beach and stopped to take photos after coming upon the smokey scene. While there, he heard a loud explosion come from the compound, which he suspected may have been a fuel tank.
The explosion sent a lid flying into the air. “It went pretty high up and took a while to come down,” said Girard.
Deputy fire chief Dave Kinvig said the blaze stretched for just under a half kilometre. Workers from the Regina Bypass Project and nearby farmers brought in water trucks in to assist firefighters.
Because the fire occurred outside of Regina, Kinvig said the fire department is not investigating. Any investigation would be done by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
The Condie Nature Refuge is located approximately 20 kilometres northwest of Regina.
