USA — Fire and public safety officials gathered Tuesday to remember one of their own with strong ties to South Texas, as the late Maurice “Marty” Martinez was laid to rest.

“It’s a very hard impact for us to take. He was a, relatively speaking, he was very young, to pass like this, and we’ll miss him, well, we’ll miss him a lot,” Ingleside Fire Chief R.J. Thomas said. “The biggest thing we’ll miss is the training that he conducted. He was a constant trainer and a mentor to many, many firefighters across the state.”

A procession followed Martinez’ casket from the Seaside Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon and made its way to the Our Lady of Assumption Church in Ingleside, where a funeral service was held. The procession later made its way to the Rose Hill Memorial Park.

3News cameras captured the procession from an overpass in Portland.

Those who knew him remember Martinez’ extensive career.

“He started with the Ingleside Fire Department. He continued a career in the fire service with the Texas Forest Service, spending 17 years in the Texas Forest Service, advancing to assistant chief for fire in the Texas Forest Service,” Thomas said.

Maurice “Marty” Martinez died on April 15 after an extended battle with heart problems. He was 44 years old.
