China — Forest fire control departments have been advised to step up efforts to prevent fires during the Spring Festival, China’s State Headquarters for Forest Fire Control said Thursday.
Fire risk has increased as prolonged drought and high temperatures in southern regions have left massive amounts of flammable debris in forest areas, Xinhua news agency reported.
The tradition of lighting firecrackers and fireworks along with burning incense and paper money in remembrance of the dead during Spring Festival may increase the risk of fire, the headquarters said.
The headquarters urged all related sectors to improve emergency plans, step up monitoring systems and strengthen coordination to ensure public safety.
Authorities warn those found responsible for causing forest fires will face severe punishment.
