Students raise more than $2500 for bushfire appeal

Australia — Staff and students at Samaritan College’s primary school campuses turned a shade of green late last month but all for a good cause.
On Thursday, October 31, the school community dressed in green to show its support for the New South Wales bushfire appeal.
Students were encouraged to wear casual clothes and bring a gold coin donation.
The initiative by the primary Student Representative Council saw both the St Teresa’s and Our Lady Help of Christians campuses raise a total of $1,347.95.
All money raised was then taken to the local Woolworths stores.
Woolworths Australia recently ran a nationwide appeal to help raise money for people and communities affected by the NSW bushfires, by matching any donation from customers dollar for dollar.
This in turn saw the total money raised reach $2695.90.
Students chose the theme of a ‘touch of green’ for the day to represent both peace and new beginnings, something which the Woolworths appeal was working towards for those affected by the recent bushfires.
Students were also asked to bring along any 5 cent coins to contribute to a coin line.
Teacher Nikki Gilford said the students’ connection and empathy for the affected communities was evident through their generosity and desire to help those in need.
SRC member Steely Cornick said the SRC was pleased with the amount raised.
“We did raise a lot of money and we had lots of fun,” Steely said.
