Fiji — THE National Fire Authority has noticed a decline in the trend of bushfires in the Western Division.
And CEO John O’Connor says this is a very positive sign from the community.
“In the last few months, we have noted a decrease in the trend and it’s probably because the sugar cane harvesting season is starting to wind down and so the numbers has declined,” he said.
“We are hoping this continues towards the end of the year.
“We are urging members of the public to start being vigilant as we start entering the hot and humid conditions.”
He said they were also happy to note an incident-free Diwali this year.
“It was quite positive because we changed our process.
“We had instructed our teams to move out into the community and where we saw children playing with firecrackers without the presence of their parents, we gave them advice and talked to the parents too.”
He said there were a lot of plans for NFA next year and he thanked the government for supporting them.
“We thank government for providing funding for us to build a fire station in Korolevu and Korovou for us and to expand our services with the purchase of two new ambulances.
“This is all about modernising our equipment, testing the competency and skills of firefighters and providing efficient and effective service to the community.”
