Russia — Russian firefighting aircraft, an airplane and a helicopter, should arrive in Nis in late July, where they will be stationed at the Serbian-Russian humanitarian center.
We expect that the two aircraft will come on July 29-30, Predrag Maric, head of the Emergency Management Sector at the Serbian Interior Ministry, told Tanjug on Saturday.
If need be, Serbia can count on Russias additional assistance, he stressed.
Maric recalled that Russian aircraft helped the Emergency Management Sector tackle blazes in Serbia in previous years.
This year, as in 2012, we have only three helicopters and three agricultural airplanes at our disposal, he said.
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has announced earlier that Russia is sending a Be-200 aircraft to Serbia to assist in putting out possible fires, the Voice of Russia reported.
Serbia asked Russia to send it a firefighting helicopter, the release reads, noting that a year ago, Russia sent several firefighting aircraft to Serbia.
In the last two months there has been no increase in the number of fires, as in June and July temperatures have not been so high, Maric told Tanjug on Saturday, noting that from 2007- 2012 the number of blazes rose by 10-15 percent,
The August-September period is ahead of us, which will be the most critical, as meteorologists say we can expect a rise in temperatures, even a heat wave in August, and very hot weather in September, Maric warned.
The head of the Emergency Management Sector says that the most common causes of fires are negligence and lack of attention, which makes them the No. 1 risk in Serbia.
After the signing of the intergovernmental agreement, the Serbian-Russian humanitarian center in Nis was established in late April 2012, its main task being a swift response in case of fires, floods and earthquakes.
