Riau Forest Fire Claims Second Life

Indonesia — JAKARTA — Raging forest and peat fire in Riau has claimed another life, on Tuesday.

Oil palm smallholder Dulsani Purba from the Bengkalis district died one week after he was admitted to the Awal Bros Pekan Hospital, Riau.

Dulsani and his wife, Laniem, were scalded and overcame by smoke when they were trapped in a fire at their farm in the Tanah Putih sub-district, Rokan Hilir while trying to put it out on June 18, Antara news agency said Wednesday.

Laniem succumbed to her injuries at the scene earlier.

Meanwhile, the news agency also reported that the Riau Haze Disaster Task Force detained 10 suspects for open burning in Riau, which had been blamed for the haze affecting Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.

One of the suspect was said to have burned about 60 hectares of land in the Rokan Hilir district which went out of control and eventually destroyed about 400 hectares of land in the surrounding areas.

The fire caused 276 families to be evacuated.
