Ghana — The youth of the Nkoranza Central and Nkoranza Estate Area of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church last week-end undertook a five-hour hike through the forests of four communities to acquaint themselves with their environment.

The exercise which began at Nkoranza continued through Akropong to Atekoano and the Dandwa Waterfalls.

Mr Emmanuel Barimah Boakye, Youth Leader of the Church, told the Ghana News Agency that the exercise formed part of its annual programme to encourage the youth to appreciate their environment and creator.

He said it was also a means to educate and encourage the youth on the need to protect the environment against excessive human activities that could lead to environmental degradation.

Mr Boakye expressed concern about bushfires which had become an annual canker to the society together with the illegal and indiscriminate felling of trees.

He said the exercise would enable the youth to appreciate the negative effect and impact of human activities on the environment and cautioned them against setting bushfires the over reliance on chemicals by farmers which affected the soil fertility.

Other annual programmes for the youth include retreats, evangelism and camp meetings to rekindle their spirit and enhance the church’s development.
