Trinidad and Tobago — POLICE are investigating the death of a 68-year-old New Grant grandfather whose burnt body was discovered on a parcel of his land on Sunday.

Errol Christopher, a father of eight and grandfather of ten, also known as “Uncle Carl” of Hindustan Road, was found after he went missing for more than 24 hours.

Police said they have not ruled out foul play in the death, pending the results of a post-mortem on the body today at the Forensic Science Centre, in St James, scheduled for today.

Investigators suspect, however, that Christopher suffered a fatal heart attack while tending to his crops at Campbell Trace, and his body burnt in a bush fire.

Christopher’s daughter, Susan-Leigh Christopher, said the family was puzzled by her father’s death since was a healthy person.

“This is all very shocking. We are just waiting on the autopsy result to find out what happened to him,” said his daughter. “He prepared his own meals, and ate a lot of raw fruits and vegetables, and drank mixed fresh fruit drinks.”

Another relative, Mechelle Francis, said that more than one month ago, Christopher had a full medical check-up at a private medical institution and received “a perfect bill of health”.

Susan-Leigh Christopher said: “Agriculture was his hobby and he would go to his land at least once or twice a week. That was his land, no one fighting him for it. He was very generous and neighbourly, and any fruits and vegetables he got from his land he would give away.”

The daughter said she was told her father left his house on Saturday to go tend to crops he planted on his parcel of land. Relatives found it strange that residents at Campbell Trace said Christopher’s car was seen still parked near his garden the next day. Her brother and a neighbour went in search of him and discovered him dead, lying on his back.

The family was told by residents at Campbell Trace that there was a bush fire over the weekend.

WPC Ferguson is continuing investigations.
