Australia — THE deadline to build the first of Australia’s safest community fire refuges after the Black Saturday disaster has been missed again, with the Victorian government failing to deliver on its promised timetable.
Victoria’s Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley has written to residents in at-risk areas outlining why trials did not start in the latest fire season, four years after 173 people died on Black Saturday. Former Victorian premier Ted Baillieu promised last year that refuges would be ready for the start of the fire season as part of the response to the bushfire royal commission.
