Namibia – A FARMWORKER, Jakob Nekongo, burned to death in a veld fire that has been raging in the Steinhausen area over the last couple of days.

The man was trapped by the fire while he was helping to put it out. Another farmworker sustained injuries and is being treated in the Gobabis State Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Thousands of hectares of grazing had been destroyed by yesterday – the third day of the fire. Some animals also perished in the fire.

It was raging across at least four farms in the area.

The fire started on the farm Stoetzer, where close to 2 000 hectares of grazing was destroyed.

Farm owner Helmut Horsthemke did not want to elaborate on the possible cause of the fire other than saying that there were “people illegally in the veld”.

He said he was consulting his lawyer on the way forward.
