Australia – Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey says he is yet to finalise any cuts to Queensland’s Rural Fire Service (RFS).

The State Government has flagged that 56 rural fire positions will go, in a move that has been criticised by firefighters and by Liberal National Party (LNP) backbencher Vaughan Johnson.

They have asked Mr Dempsey to urgently reconsider the plan.

Mr Dempsey told State Parliament he will make sure the cuts do not affect firefighting capacity.

“Any efficiencies will not take place until after the current fire season, which is more than six months away,” he said.

“I will not approve any restructure until I am fully satisfied that every stakeholder has been consulted, particularly our brave rural fire workers.”

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney says the funding is not going to paid staff.
“They won’t go to overweight bureaucrats in shiny uniforms and $60,000 vehicles,” he said.
