Spain –– Nearly 1,000 Spanish firefighters backed by 28 water-bombing aircraft and helicopters on Saturday sought to contain wildfires that had razed vast forest areas and threatened villages.

A forest fire in eastern Spain forced 700 people to evacuate their homes and indirectly caused a brief power cut at a nuclear plant, authorities said. Forest fires raged in the Valencia and Barcelona regions, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people from entire villages.
More than 1,000ha of woodland were ravaged in Cortes de Palla in Valencia, said the head of the eastern region, Alberto Fabra, who termed it ‘one of the biggest fires in recent years’.
The fire was sparked on Thursday during work to fit solar panels on homes in the area, he said.
