Namibia — An elderly man died over the weekend while burning dry grass.
Silvanus Daniel (83), from Ongombesa village in Oshikoto Region, burnt to death on Saturday around 11h00.
Daniel was allegedly burning grass in a grazing area near his homestead when strong winds caused the fire to move in his direction, trapping him. Neighbours who saw big flames, ran to the scene to put out the fire. By then, the neighbours were not aware that Daniel was engulfed in the inferno.
Other villagers were putting out the fire on one side not knowing that the elderly man was on the other side. They only discovered his body moments later when one of them went to put out fire on the side where he was, said Oshana Police Regional Commander Commissioner, Ndahangwapo Kashihakumwa.
According to Kashihakumwa, police suspect that Daniel had trouble putting out the fire because of the wind.
During that time of the day, the wind turns to be a bit strong. Probably when fire surrounded him, he became drowsy and collapsed.
