USA — Firefighting crews have contained a 27-acre wildfire in a small border town near Laredo, but not before it destroyed four homes and damaged three others and an auto repair shop.
That’s according to the American Red Cross. The Texas Forest Service reports no injuries were reported in the fire in El Cenizo, a town of about 3,600 residents 12 miles down the Rio Grande from Laredo.
The Laredo Morning Times reports 40 people were left homeless by the blaze that broke out about 4 p.m. Monday.
Witnesses said it the fire started in Mexico and jumped the banks of the Rio Grande. Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar says about 2,000 acres were blackened on both sides of the border, but the fire was contained a few blocks in El Cenizo.
