Nepal — Three persons have been injured and 23 houses and sheds gutted in a fire that has been raging in six community forests of Jhula and Garayala VDCs in Rukum district.

Kul Bahadur Buda, 18, Tejendra BK, 20, and Susmita Nepali, 16, of Singhalek were injured in the blaze that started on Wednesday morning and is yet to be taken under control. Five houses and 18 sheds belonging to local residents were reduced to ashes in the inferno that swept Singhalek Community Forest and engulfed nearby forests, local Dirgha Bahadur Chand said. “Over a dozen surrounding VDCs are at a risk of fire.” The injured are undergoing treatment in the district hospital. The locals are compelled to keep a night-long vigil fearing spread of the fire to their villages. “We are feeling unsafe as the fire has not been controlled yet,” said Usha Chand. “Around 100 hectares of forest has been destroyed in the fire. It is a great loss,” said the treasurer of Singhalek Forest Users’ Committee.
