USA — A man died while trying to put out a brush fire in the Waterford Lakes area of Orlando on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the brush fire was moving toward homes on the 700 block of Magnolia Creek Circle.

The man who called 911 said the man who was killed is his neighbor, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Fire Department said the man, who was in his 80s, got caught in the fire while trying to extinguish it himself and died.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the man was burning trash in a barrel outside, which he does regularly. The man used a garden tool to throw dirt onto the flames to put out the fire, according to detectives.

A neighbor said she saw the elderly man but had no idea he was in danger.

“I saw a very large fire and I saw a man on the side of the fire. I thought he was in charge of the fire at first, but it just seemed too big of a fire,” Amy Narvaez said.

Narvaez immediately called 911 after the flames started spreading quickly in dry conditions.

The man has not been identified.

Investigators won’t know how the man died until an autopsy is preformed.
