Namibia — Veld fires fanned by strong winds are raging in the southern and southwestern parts of the Omusati and Oshana region, especially in the Uuvudhiya and Okahao constituencies.
The regional councillor for Uuvudhiya, Amuternya Ndaafa, says the fire in his constituency has destroyed thousands of hectares of grazing pastures since Wednesday evening.
He says the grazing areas that have been worst hit are Oniizimba, Iiyala, Omapale and Engombe.
According to him, workers of the Ministry of Agriculture and members of the Defence Force are helping with the fire-fighting effort, and by Thursday morning there were still some areas that were burning.
Ndaafa said the fires also destroyed fences and cattle posts.
The Councillor of Okahao, Isai Kapenambili, said yesterday that a huge fire was burning in the areas of Okakoto, Onambandje, Ongaya and was heading towards Iidhimba and Onamatanga.
He said residents, farmers, Police officers and NDF soldiers were fighting the fire.
Omusati governor Sacky Kayone last week made a radio appeal for people to go and assist.
