USA —    A man perished in a fire he apparently set to burn a large brush pile, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday, April 13.

Sheriff’s Det. Rodney Baker said the man was found in the late afternoon after units from Burkettsville Community Fire, Ansonia Rescue, Southwest Mercer Fire and Rossburg Fire arrived at the scene of a corn field fire in the area of Lightsville Northern Road south of Ohio 705.

Sheriff’s department investigators believe they know the man’s name, but it had not been released Wednesday morning, pending positive identification by the Darke County Coroner’s Office.

The man might have been using an accelerant to start the fire, Baker said, and his clothing caught fire. He then fell in the field, setting the corn field on fire. It is believed the man is a local land owner.

Twenty acres and the large brush pile were involved in the fire, Baker said.
