Fiji — The increase in the number of bush fires has prompted the National Fire Authority to seriously address illegal burnings taking place around the country.
NFA Acting Chief fire officer Qionilau Mocetai says his officers have to attend to these sorts of illegal burnings almost everyday at various towns and cities. Its illegal by law, to burn anything within town or city boundaries and this law is in the Environment Management Act.
Mocetai says the NFA will be carrying out a public awareness campaign to ensure that illegal burning is stamped out.
The most recent bushfire the NFA had to attend happened on Sunday at a grassland near Serua.
The quick and decisive action by the fire crew saved the nearby homes from being destroyed by the fire.
