Spain — A 25-year-old Spaniard has been sentenced to 1½ years in prison for causing a large wildfire when burning letters sent to him by his former girlfriend, press reports said on Friday.
The young man set the letters on fire, threw them into a garbage container and left by car in March 2006.
His act sparked a wildfire that destroyed nearly 2 000 hectares of vegetation in eastern Valencia province, severing road links, forcing the evacuation of several houses and the closure of the Gandia port.
The Valencia court ordered the man to pay 1,2-million (about R13-million) in damages.
