As many as five horses narrowly escaped flames Monday night. At about 7:30, a fire was reported west of New Deal. It is not clear if this started as a control burn. The fire charred some acreage and a barn with horses inside. The horses were rescued and are now safe.
It took at least four fire departments including New Deal, Abernathy, Shallowater, and Carlisle to battle that blaze and protect the horses. As of 10 pm firefighters were still on scene. Traffic was blocked along Farm to Market road 1729 west of New Deal for a time.
