Australia —

The ACT Government has abandoned the stay and defend or go early policy days before the start of the bushfire season, while the Opposition has attacked it for reducing backburning rates.

The Opposition has issued figures that show rates of backburning dropped dramatically in recent years to the lowest levels since 2003.

The news comes as Emergency Services Minister Simon Corbell has warned that the bushfire season may be one of the most dangerous in recent years.

Mr Corbell said the change in policy from stay and defend or go early to protect, act and survive came after the interim findings into the Black Saturday bushfires.
