USA — Toughing it out in a 10-week firefighting training program may lead to a job for a chosen few Salinas young people.

The Rancho Cielo Youth Campus is now enrolling candidates for its “Rancho Cielo Fire Suppression Program.”

Men and women between 17 and 24 are eligible to enroll in this free 10-week training.

Participants must have a GED or high school diploma or be enrolled in school.

An open house will be held March 4 at Rancho Cielo, 710 Old Stage Road in Salinas

Training topics will include: Introduction to the incident command system, high safety, basic first aid and CPR, fire operations, basic air operation, wildland fire chainsaws, wildland fire orientation, human factors and more.

All training materials and equipment will be provided.

Completion of training will fulfill the required training hours for the “Red Card” Type 2, Hand Crew (with restrictions) for state certification.

Graduates will be eligible to receive a paid position on the Rancho Cielo Fuel Management Crew.

All training will be conducted by the Salinas Rural and North County fire districts at Rancho Cielo.
