Mozambique — The death toll from bush fires in Mozambique this month has risen to 49, with more than 2,000 others left homeless, the government said on Tuesday.
“Our evaluation of the uncontrolled bush fires in the first week of September shows that 49 people were killed, 23 others seriously injured in the bush fires which swept across the central provinces of Manica and Sofala,” cabinet spokesman Luis Covane said.
He said more than 2,000 people lost their homes in the fires, which were fuelled by high temperatures. The fires covered 3 million hectares of land.
