South Africa — Thick smoke billowing from a veld fire resulted in the death of a motorcyclist in a twelve-vehicle collision on KwaZulu-Natal’s busy N2 freeway on Wednesday, the province’s transport department said.

Spokesperson Nonkululeko Mbatha said twelve vehicles including a motorbike crashed into each other near the Mvoti River bridge, near Stanger, as the smoke reduced visibility on the freeway on both south and north bound lanes.

“The drivers could not see because the smoke was so thick,” said Mbatha.

The motorcyclist died at the scene and twelve other people sustained minor injuries.

The freeway was closed initially but had been re-opened. The fire had since been contained, Mbatha said.
