A workshop to impart theoretical knowledge to forest fire volunteers is underway from 19th June for two days in the conference hall of Hotel Dragon Roots in Thimphu. Participants include volunteers under the Forest Fire Volunteer Programme that has been initiated by the Forest Fire Management Unit under the Social Forestry Division mainly towards protecting the natural resources of our country. The Director of the Department of Forest, Mr. Karma Dukpa, was the Chief Guest.

The objectives of the volunteer group are as follows:
1. To assist the Department of Forest in combating forest fires
2. To share the responsibilities of the department in protecting the countrys natural
resources. This will also contribute toward fulfilling the natural policy of keeping forest cover
over 60% for all time.

The 1st Forest Fire Volunteer workshop has been conducted this year with teaching of theory
for 2 days about wild fire behavior, suppression techniques and basic safety to 80 volunteers
with support from the Decentralised Natural Resources Management Project under the
Planning Policy Division.

The 2nd batch volunteer workshop and training will be organised similarly as per the
registration.
