Mpumalanga, South Africa — Five veld fires were raging out of control in Mpumalanga on Sunday night, Working on Fire said.

“Five fires remain out of control in Sabie, Belfast, Nelspruit West, Piet Retief north west and Piet Retief south,” Working on Fire said in a statement around 20:00 on Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday, Working on Fire’s provincial co-ordinator Jacques Benade told the media, “we are back into firestorm scenario… nothing is under control.”

Benade said there were “literally” fires all over Mpumalanga.

Fires in Machadodorp, Paulpietersberg, Mattafin (alongside the Nelspruit Airfield) and Loskop were still categorised as “active”.

The fires at Lothair and Oshoek had been contained.

Weather conducive to fires was expected to continue on Monday.
