Brunei Holds 2ndSub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee Meeting On Haze

Brunei — Ministers and other high-ranking officials responsible for theenvironment from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailandare currently attending the 2nd Sub-regional Ministerial Steering CommitteeMeeting at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The two-day meeting, which began yesterday, is being chaired by theIndonesian State Minister of Environment, Rachmat Nadi Witoelar Kartaadipoetra.

The co-chairman is Brunei’s Minister of Development, Pehin Dato Awang HjAbdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.

According to a press statement, the first such meeting was held in Cebu,Philippines on November 9, 2006. The setting up of the Sub-Regional MinisterialSteering Committee was to oversee the implementation of short- and long-termplans to effectively tackle haze pollution.

The meeting will bring up discussions on the progress of theoperationalisation on the haze emergency fund as well as the outcome of thehigh-level conference that was held in February.
