About 40 firefighters have worked through the night to contain a major forest fire south of Nelson.

The blaze at Wairoa Gorge has destroyed up to 150 hectares of pine forest.

Fire crews have spent the night preparing a firebreak and dampening down hotspots, but there are fears strong winds could cause the blaze to flare up again.

In West Auckland, more than 50 firefighters battled a blaze which gutted a workshop in Scenic Drive. Explosions, thought to have been caused by gas cylinders, hampered efforts to control the fire.

A bomb threat at a house fire forced the closure of State Highway One and the main trunk railway line around Ngaruawahia in North Waikato overnight.

And investigations are underway into a fire which damaged a building at Brentwood School in Upper Hutt.
