GFMC analysis (comment inserted ex-post on this web page on 18 August 2010): By 16 August 2010 it has been noted that a wrong algorithm for the calculation of area burned had been applied since the beginning of 2009.The corrected data for the whole fire season are published starting 18 August 2010. A 2010 summary will be published at the end of the fire season.

Village Kamenka burned out from forest fire in Vladimir Oblast

On July 26, 2010, village Kamenka Melenkovsky regione of Vladimir Oblast burned out from forest fire. Following Vladimir oblast EMERCOM data from 37 houses of the village 18 burned out fully. All village population of 41 persons evacuated,  no victims. Forest fire burned out the village has preliminary burned area more than 5,000 ha. Currently fire edge is 10 kilometers to south-west from the regional center Melenka.

The village was burned out mainly due to Vladimir oblast EMERCOM underestimated forest fire hazard level in region. In particular, in a summary of EMERCOM dated July 26, 2010 it was reported that “by 8 a.m. this morning active fires in forests and peat lands of the Oblast are absent”. But that time actually a lot of forest and peat fires were active. It is not known that was it willful misrepresentation of information or usual slovenliness but as a result proper measures to control forest fires were not taken and the village was burned out.

This is already not first similar case in Vladimir Oblast this year. As a result of forest fire in mid-May in Kovrovo region constructions were burned out in the outskirts of village Krasny Mayak and miraculously fire guards were able to save settlement. In spite of this Vladimir Oblast EMERCOM each day was reporting that no active forest and peat fires in the region

Nobody was responsible for concealment of information about that fire and for the absence of proper action in forest fire fighting. Irresponsibility and impunity are the main reasons of officials’ slovenliness. As a result of Vladimir officials was fire destroying 18 houses in the village Kamenka and big area of remarkable pine stands.

Eurasian Experimental Fire Weather Information System
The system has been developed by forest fire researchers from Canada, Russia and Germany is displayed on this website starting 18 July 2001. Complete information and a set of daily fire weather and fire behaviour potential maps covering Eurasia (the Baltic Region, Eastern Europe, countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Mongolia) can be accessed at:

Daily Fire Occurrence and Fire Danger Maps of the Fire Laboratory of the Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk
Selected fire occurrence maps, satellite images and a forest fire danger map are prepared daily by the Russian GFMC correspondent Dr. Anatoly Sukhinin, Fire Laboratory of the Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk, in collaboration with the Emergency Situation Monitoring and Forecasting Agency, Krasnoyarsk branch. The maps are produced on the base of satellite data (classification by the NOAA AVHRR). They show the fire locations (by latitude and longitude) and the area affected by fire (red signature, size in ha). The red arrow at each fire location points to the nearest populated place. The terms Oblast or Kray used in the maps are designations of administrative regions. A map showing the boundaries of administrative regions and a legend is included below.

Bibliography on fire in ecosystems of boreal Eurasia:
One of the results of the first international fire science conference in the Russian Federation (1993) was the publication of a monograph on fire in boreal Eurasia, including some selected contributions on boreal North America. The literature cited in the monograph contains numerous publications which in many cases are not easily accessible. To facilitate literature search the bibliographical sources are provided by topic (chapter).
