Authorities in West Australia are warning the extreme temperatures predicted for today and tomorrow will bring the state’s most severe bushfire conditions of the season. The mercury’s expected to hit about 40 degrees in Perth today, with east to north-east winds, and fire danger ratings of extreme to catastrophic are possible over most of the south-west. The Fire and Emergency Services Authority says when a catastrophic fire danger’s issued, residents should leave early because it won’t be safe to stay and defend homes. It’s suggesting they spend today at the beach, shopping in the closest major town or with family and friends away from bushland.

As Christmas festivities get underway, Jay Gray and his family are preparing to spend Christmas Eve, homeless. Bushfires in South Australia devoured at least 13 houses and eight sheds overnight and the area was on high alert as temperatures remained over 30 degrees Celsius. [Jay Gray, Resident]: “Yeah, we just sort of went down the street doing some Christmas shopping and seen the smoke and so we were going to come home and do something about it, but we weren’t allowed to come home.” Rural fire authorities say they expect to discover more destroyed houses ahead of Christmas Day. [Kevin May, Rural Fire Service]: “We expect that number (of destroyed houses) to rise probably into the twenties once we get into the fire ground today and have a good look through. Luckily we’ve got no reports of any deaths at this stage.” Firefighters continue to battle the flames using all the equipment at their disposal and residents do everything they can to prevent any further losses.

Residents Flee Bushfires in South Australia

People of the town of Port Lincoln in South Australia faced an extremely dangerous bushfire Wednesday, with another fire not that far away. Authorities declared a full-blown emergency this afternoon, when the fire erupted about two miles outside the town limits. Residents were urged to evacuate. Strong winds and temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit fanned large flames and heavy smoke towards the town. The massive smoke hampered water-bombing aircraft in their efforts to battle the flames. Roads became congested with evacuating residents and sightseers. Over 1,200 acres of land were raised and reportedly six houses lost. Fire services in the area reported the fire was under control late on Wednesday afternoon. About 400 miles southeast, another fire burned near the town of Kingston. Fire services say they’re confident they would get the upper hand on the blaze, as cooler temperatures are forecasted for the evening. Today’s conditions mirrored those back in February in the neighboring state of Victoria. Labeled “Black Saturday” the fires killed 173 people.
