Fires in Argentina and Paraguay

18 July 2008

Fires, probably related to land clearing or agriculture, were burning across a broad area of Argentina and Paraguay on 16 July 2008, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image. Places where the sensor detected active fires are outlined in red. The wind was blowing from the north, spreading long plumes of smoke as well as dust from the shoreline of the large lake at image left. Fires are especially smoky in the floodplain of the Paraná River north of Bueno Aires.
