Smoke over Montana

Smoke over Montana

2 August 2007

Smoke sprawled over much of Montana on 29 July 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image the same day. This picture shows smoke mingling with clouds over Wyoming, Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The smoke appears especially thick where the borders of Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan meet. The smoke can be distinguished from the clouds by its duller color and more diffuseoutlines.

As smoke collected over eastern Montana, wildfires burned in the western part of thestate, as well as Idaho. The fires were the most likely source of the smoke.

The large image provided above is at MODIS’ maximum resolution of 250 meters perpixel.
