Bainskloof fire “under control” but strong winds continue to fan flames on TableMountain.

3 Helicopters, 3 water tankers, 5 unimogs, 22 fire tenders and firefighters from Table Mountain National Park, City of Cape Town and Working on Fire were rapidly deployed this afternoon to fight an uncontrolled fire which quickly moved across the face of Table Mountain, placing lives and properties at risk. One person has died. Urban edge areas were evacuated but despite severe conditions, very little damage to property has beenreported.

Burning embers blown by very strong winds caused spot fires to ignite ahead of the mainfireline, making the situation unpredictable and dangerous for firefighters. The earlier danger to houses on the urban edge appears to have been averted however the flank above Tafelberg Rd is moving downwards and may jump theroad. Spot fires are currently burning below and above Signal Hill road and LionsHead, and high in the mountain with a new flank above Camps Bay.

Approx 100 firefighters from TMNP, WOF and City of Cape Town will remain on the firelines throughout thenight, with further assistance from Wemmershoek Mountain To Ocean Forestry crew latertonight. Working on Fire Graskop and Clanwilliam firefighting crews will relieve firefighters in the morning and helicopters will mobilize at firstlight.

The Bainskloof fire is under control. Approx 100 firefighters from CapeNature, Working on Fire and Cape Winelands will remain on the fireline tonight and monitor the area for flare-ups for the next48 hrs.

A veld fire that started in the afternoon at Ocean View was contained by South Peninsula Emergency Services by approx 18h00.

Strong winds and high temperatures are expected to continue tomorrow.
