Fires in Botswana

25September 2006

Botswana is currently facing a very severe fire season with fires burning all over the country. These fires have magnitudes of 800 000 ha and more and are burning since weeks threatening areas such as the Chobe National Park the Moremi National Park and many other valuable areas.

Between 19 and 24 September 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured these images of the area. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fire are outlined in red. The high resolution images provided below have a spatial resolution of 250 m.
