Hot and dry conditions settling in across the Iberian Peninsula brought devastating wildfires to Spain and Portugal in early August 2006.Since last week several forest fires blazed through the region of Galicia,Spain. Due to the serious situation the Spanish Ministry of Interior requestedthe activation of the Community Mechanism for Civil Protection.
Spainhas requested the following European assistance through the Monitoring andInformation Centre (MIC):
- 3 Canadair Aircraft
- 5 Helicopters with water bucket or helitank
- 20 Fire Trucks
This image of the area was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAs Terrasatellite on 8 August 2006. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. Smoke spills out over the Atlantic Ocean.
