Widely Scattered Fires across CentralAfrica
On December 24, 2002, more than 7,000 fires (indicated with red dots) wereburning across the northwestern and north central African Sahel and savannaregions. This particular scene, acquired by the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor aboard NASAs Aqua satellite, shows the northwestern region of Africa. The resulting haze and smokecan be seen blowing westward toward the Atlantic.
Widely Scattered Fires across North Africa
On December 24, 2002, more than 5,000 fires (indicated with red dots) wereburning across the north central African Sahel and savanna regions. Thisparticular scene, acquired by the ModerateResolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite, shows the north central region of Africa spanning parts of thecountries of Chad (top center), the Central African Republic (bottom center),and Cameroon (left). The resulting haze and smoke can be seen blowing westwardand is particularly thick (gray pixels) toward the bottom left of this scene.
