ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has announced his government’s blueprint for the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.
The 2003 bushfires tore through Tidbinbilla, destroying 99 per cent of the reserve and killing most of its endangered rock wallaby population.
Three years later the land is regenerating and today Mr Stanhope has announced the next move towards recovery.
The reserve, which borders Namadgi National Park in the south-east of the ACT, will be redeveloped from scratch to entice families and tourists to visit.
Centred around the rejuvenated Tibdinbilla wetlands, the park will blend natural settings with interactive activities.
Unlike the original reserve, the new version will not have any enclosures to separate wildlife from people.
Construction is expected to take two years with most of the funding coming from bushfire insurance.
