Howardannounces national bushfire inquiry
10 October 2003
Prime Minister John Howard has announced a national inquiry on bushfire management and prevention.
Mr Howard says after last summer’s severe fires, it is important that bushfire arrangements be examined from a national perspective.
The inquiry will look at the coordination of fire fighting resources and management practices across various state and territory authorities.
Mr Howard says the inquiry will not duplicate the work of other Federal, State and Territory investigations.
It will be chaired by the head of the South Australian Country Fire Service,Stuart Ellis, and it will report to the Council of Australian Governments next March.
