USA — Ocean County government and 23 towns will share nearly $300,000 from the Air Force because of a forest fire.

An F-16 fighter practicing at the Warren Grove Gunnery Range last May ignited the blaze. Flames destroyed homes, forced evacuations and burned more than 17,000 acres of Pinelands.

The Air Force says it’s paying all direct costs associated with putting out the fire.

The community that did the most battling the blaze, Barnegat Township, has asked for money separately. No settlement has been announced so far.
