ASEAN — Environment ministers from all ten Asean countries will discuss details of setting up a centre to better tackle the annual haze when they meet in Laos next month, Asean secretary-general Le Luong Minh has said.
His comments, in an e-mailed interview with The Straits Times, come as Indonesia’s Parliament last week agreed to ratify the Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, making it the final member to do so.
The Asean Coordinating Centre for Transboundary Haze Pollution Control, Mr Minh said, will help conduct training and capacity-building activities to strengthen preparedness and mitigate the impact of land and forest fires in the region.
It will also raise awareness and understanding of transboundary haze issues, and coordinate and mobilise technical and financial resources to tackle the problem.
