United Kingdom — New Tecumseth firefighters made quick work of a grass fire that broke out today around 3 p.m. at a rural property east of Tottenham.

The fire claimed about an acre and a half of grass in a field located west of 10 Sideroad just south of the 4th Line.

The fire was extinguished in about half an hour.

Firefighters from Station 3 in Tottenham and Station 2 in Beeton worked the field, using water to douse the area where the fire started, along with a cluster of trees singed by the blaze. Other firefighters walked up and down the field using leaf blowers to snuff out any remaining hot spots.

At the scene, New Tecumseth Fire Rescue Fire Prevention Officer Simon Worley said the grass fire was probably the sixth one so far this year in the municipality.

The property owner watched on as fire crews extinguished what was left of the fire. He said he was burning some wood when the wind picked up and spread some of the embers into the field.

There was only some minor property damage caused by the fire.

Police closed 10 Sideroad temporarily between the 4th Line and 3rd Line during the operation.
