Brunei — A Forest fire occurred at the Muara-Tutong Highway near Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) campus yesterday afternoon. The fire which occurred around 3.30pm caused massive damage to the forest area facing the Tungku Beach.

A team of firefighters in two fire engines from the Rimba Fire Station rushed to the scene to control and extinguish the blaze. Also present was the traffic police from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) who directed the traffic that was affected by the smoke.

The blaze was suspected to be caused by the current hot and dry weather. Firefighters also faced difficulties in extinguishing the blaze due to strong winds and the terrain of the scene. The same forest area also caught fire in 2009.

In relation to the current hot and dry weather, the Fire and Rescue Department advised the public not to conduct open burning especially near the forest or bushes as it can lead to forest and bush fires. Apart from the Brunei-Muara District, the Fire and Rescue Department also received emergency calls on bush and forest fires in Belait and Tutong Districts this week.
