New Zealand —  Fire crews from Mosgiel, Outram and Lookout Point and a helicopter from the Wenita Forestry company were called to a fire near Berwick Forest, in the Clutha District this afternoon.

A fire communications spokesman said three appliances from the three stations were supporting the helicopter after a workman at a small power station started a grass fire.

The fire was on steep terrain and the helicopter was called in to dampen the fire down from the topside, the spokesman said.

The appliances had been supplying the helicopter with water and it appeared the fire was under control, he said.

Fire crews were preparing to leave the scene and leave the fire in the hands of the Wenita Forestry company and the Department of Conservation.

Meanwhile, Balfour and Lumsden fire crews were called to a controlled burn that jumped the fence along Waimea Valley Rd near Balfour.

The 400-metre long fire was put out by fire crews after two hours, the spokesman said.
