Tamil Nadu, India — Fire Fighting and Protection Force personnel have beenkept on a high alert in the Mudumalai Forest area in the hilly Nilgiris Districtof Tamil Nadu, to prevent the spread of the fire reported in the Bandipurforests in neighbouring Karnataka.

According to forest department sources, heavy fire was raging in NagarholeForest area in Bandipur in Karnataka and there was a possibility of the firespreading to forest areas in Tamil Nadu and also Kerala.

To prevent the possible spread of the fire, the force, numbering about 60,had been kept in readiness to carry out a ‘backfire operation,’ the sources said.

Meanwhile, a large number of wild animals had crossed to Mudumalai andMuthanga in Kerala, fearing for lives and also in search of water and food, theysaid.
