Fires and Haze in West Africa

Widespread agricultural burning in Senegal and Mali combinedwith blowing dust to create hazy skies over West Africa on 7 November 2007, whenthe Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over headand captured this image. Places where MODIS detected active fires are outlinedin red. The lower image shows a close-up of the area between Tambacounda—thelargest city in eastern Senegal—and the Senegal-Mali border; fires and smokewere especially concentrated in the area. The smoke to the southeast may bemixed with blowing dust.
